Boss Guide
Strategies for every main and optional boss in Pywel
- ⚔Always carry 100+ pieces of Grilled Meat into boss fights. You can eat while attacking, effectively combining offense and healing in one action.
- ⚔Upgrade weapons to Refinement Level 4+ before tackling major bosses. Higher refinement dramatically increases damage output.
- ⚔Keep all unique boss weapons, especially the Sword of the Lord (from Kailok) and Tauria Curved Sword (from Crowcaller). These weapons have special effects that make them superior throughout the entire game.
- ⚔For bosses with shields or blocking: use heavy attacks (R2/RT) to break their guard. Heavy attacks consume stamina but are essential against defensive enemies.
- ⚔For bosses with unblockable attacks (typically monsters): focus on dodging. After the boss misses a combo, you have a brief window to land hits before the next attack sequence.
- ⚔Observe attack patterns for 1-2 cycles before committing to aggressive offense. Most bosses telegraph their moves with clear animations.
- ⚔Perfect Dodge timing (dodge at the last possible moment) triggers slow-motion and creates a large counter-attack window. Practice this on weaker enemies first.
- ⚔When a boss enters super armor mode (blue glow, invulnerable), stop attacking immediately and prepare to dodge their enhanced attack sequence.
Your first major boss encounter. Matthias is a knight who teaches you the fundamentals of boss combat. Focus on learning his attack patterns: he telegraphs most moves with clear wind-ups. Practice parrying his sword swings to stagger him, then follow up with quick attack combos. His grab attack can be dodged by rolling sideways. After defeating him, you unlock the powerful kick move that becomes essential for later fights. This is a tutorial boss designed to prepare you for harder encounters ahead.
A goblin boss representing a significant difficulty spike from Matthias. Kailok has only one health bar but hits much harder. His sword generates wide-area wave attacks that you can block, though blocking consumes stamina. Keep your stamina gauge full at all times so you can block his ranged waves. When Kailok enters super armor mode (indicated by a blue glow around him), he becomes temporarily invulnerable to damage. Stop attacking immediately when you see this glow and prepare to dodge or block his incoming assault. The Sword of the Lord reward is one of the best weapons for quick attacks and should be kept for the entire game.
A two-phase encounter that tests your mobility and awareness. Phase 1 involves standard combat against the Reed Devil. Phase 2 is where the fight becomes challenging: five totems appear around the arena that you must destroy. Each totem only requires a few quick attacks to break, but you will be constantly harassed by ranged attacks and additional enemies. The key is to never run in a straight line between totems — keep dodging and weaving to avoid projectiles. Heal immediately if you take damage, and you can heal while attacking the totems or while dodging. Stay mobile and prioritize destroying all five totems quickly to end the phase.
More of a puzzle encounter than a traditional boss fight. Tenebrum floats in the air and cannot be damaged with normal attacks. You must use Force Palm (hold L1+R1) to hit him with spirit energy projectiles. The best time to attack is when Tenebrum stays in the center of the arena to charge up his own attack — this gives you a clear shot. If you get hit by his projectiles, you will fall and take fall damage, but you can heal with food items. Force Palm consumes Spirit, and when you run out, hold L3+R3 to restore it. While restoring Spirit, hide behind one of the pillars in the arena to avoid his attacks. This fight is about patience and resource management rather than raw combat skill.
A multi-phase boss fight that becomes progressively more aggressive. Phase 1 is when Kearush is least dangerous, using shorter combos and slower attacks. The optimal strategy is to dodge forward-right when he attacks, wait for him to complete his combo and miss, then land exactly three quick attacks before backing off and preparing to dodge again. A crucial tip: you can heal while performing quick attack combos, effectively combining offense and healing in one action. If Kearush climbs the walls, immediately run to the covered areas on the sides where he cannot drop down on you. As the fight progresses, his combos become longer and more unpredictable. Bring at least 100 pieces of Grilled Meat and heal aggressively throughout the fight.
You encounter Crowcaller twice during the story. The first fight is relatively easy with only one health bar. The second encounter is the real challenge. The most dangerous attack is when Crowcaller flies high into the air — wait for him to perform his second midair dodge animation, then immediately roll by holding Circle/B. This timing will consistently dodge his dive attack. Before the boss fight, make sure to activate the fast travel point (floor plate) on the path in front of the tree. If you get stuck, you can quit the fight, stock up on more Grilled Meat (bring 100+), and fast travel back. The Tauria Curved Sword reward is exceptional for heavy attacks and crowd control, making it essential for later boss fights.
A pivotal story boss with straightforward mechanics. Cassius is a skilled swordsman but follows predictable patterns. Focus on learning his attack sequences and look for openings after his combo finishers. Unlike some earlier bosses, Cassius does not have multiple phases or transformation mechanics, making this a test of your fundamental combat skills. Use the Tauria Curved Sword from Crowcaller for heavy attacks, and maintain aggressive pressure while staying ready to dodge his counter-attacks. This fight is more about execution than strategy — if you have mastered parrying and dodging by this point, Cassius should not pose a major challenge.
A two-phase boss with a complete transformation between phases. Ludvig has two full health bars and uses lightning-based attacks. Phase 1 is relatively manageable with standard dodge-and-attack tactics. Phase 2 is where the fight becomes intense: Awakened Ludvig attacks relentlessly and teleports constantly around the arena, making it difficult to land hits. Focus entirely on dodging during this phase and only attack during brief windows when he completes a combo. Continue the strategy of landing light attack combos while simultaneously healing with food. As always, bring at least 100 pieces of Grilled Meat to sustain through both phases.
Another two-phase transformation boss with two health bars. Myurdin uses fire damage in his second phase. Phase 1 strategy: focus on parrying his attacks and use heavy attacks with the Tauria Curved Sword (obtained from Crowcaller). Parrying is particularly effective in this phase and opens large damage windows. Phase 2: Myurdin transforms into Lava Myurdin and his attack patterns change completely. He uses devastating lava-based attacks that cover large areas. Switch your focus from parrying to pure dodging — do not let your stamina bar fully deplete or you will be unable to dodge his follow-up attacks. Maintain stamina discipline and only attack when you have enough stamina reserved for emergency dodges.
Despite having only one arm, this version of Ludvig is extremely dangerous with only one health bar but devastating lightning attacks. Equipment is crucial for this fight: equip two swords instead of the default double-handed axe, as dual-wielding provides much faster attack speed and actually deals more damage. Use the Sword of the Lord (from Kailok) to cast wave attacks at range. If you do not have two swords, equip the two purple axes that should be in your inventory. Since you have likely fought multiple bosses in succession by this point, you may be low on healing items. Hunt animals in the woods around the boss area, skin them for meat, and cook at the pot in Beighen village to the north. Stock up to 100+ Grilled Meat before attempting this fight.
One of the most challenging bosses in the main story. Gregor wields a halberd with incredible reach and power. His most dangerous attack pattern occurs when he enters super armor mode (becomes invulnerable) and performs multiple rapid stab attacks in succession. When you see him enter this state, dodge continuously until the combo ends — do not try to attack or block. For this fight, prioritize dodging over blocking or parrying, as his attacks have too much range and power to safely block. Use the proven strategy of landing quick attack combos while healing simultaneously to tank through incoming damage. Maintain aggressive offense between his combo strings.
A human boss with a shield who frequently summons a ghost knight companion, effectively turning this into a partial double-boss fight. Fortain has only one health bar but the constant ghost summons make this one of the more frustrating encounters. The ghost knight either slams the ground or shoots arrows, forcing you to dodge constantly while also dealing with Fortain himself. Use heavy attacks with the Tauria Curved Sword, and make sure you have unlocked the green skill "Nature's Echo" which duplicates your heavy attacks for double damage. Execute a heavy attack combo followed by light attacks to break his defenses and deal damage. When he summons the blue ghost, immediately dodge away and wait for it to disappear. If you struggle with this fight, invest time in cooking higher quality meat for more effective healing per use.
One of the final major story bosses. This is a two-phase encounter with a transformation. Lucian Bastier represents the culmination of all combat skills you have learned throughout the game. Apply all the fundamental techniques: parrying, perfect dodging, stamina management, and aggressive healing during attack combos. The fight tests your mastery of the combat system rather than introducing new mechanics. By this point, you should have fully upgraded weapons (Refinement Level 4+), the best Abyss Core loadout, and a full stock of healing items. Execute the core combat loop: observe patterns, parry or perfect dodge, counter attack, and heal during offense.
